CAROL Black's election to Banbridge Council marked a great day for the people of Dromore, according to UUP deputy leader Danny Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy described the Ulster Unionist candidate's win as a famous victory and "a Saint Valentine's Day massacre for the DUP".
He said, "This is a superb result for the Ulster Unionist Party. We were discounted, overlooked and sidelined but now the people have spoken.
"This superb result vindicates the long term strategy of the Ulster Unionist Party. It means the Ulster Unionist stance has been vindicated.
"The people have seen through the DUP and they have returned to the real party of Unionism. The Ulster Unionist Party will keep faith with the people."
Mr. Kennedy congratulated Ms. Black on fighting what he called a really effective, locally based campaign.
"This is a great day for her and for the people of Dromore," he said. "I wish her well just as I wish the people of Dromore well."
