DROMORE’S Thornhill Community Association this week stressed that a recent assault in the estate was in no way typical of an area that had made great strides and led the way in strengthening relationships with police.

The association condemned the January 15 incident in which two men assaulted a third, aged 43, at Thornhill Drive in the early hours of the morning.

But committee member, Mr. Colin Halliday, who previously chaired the local community association for nine years, emphasised that such attacks were as unusual as they were unwelcome.

Mr. Halliday noted that there was a thriving neighbourhood watch scheme in the estate, while representatives regularly took part in the local community police liaison committee as well as attending as many meetings as possible of the District Policing Partnership.

The association’s emphasis, he said, was very much on promoting the estate and working in partnership with the District Council to secure necessary improvements, a new path recently laid in the children’s park being just one example.

He said there was good co-operation too between the community association, the council and the Housing Executive.

“We want Thornhill to be a welcoming estate”, he said, going on to outline some of the initiatives undertaken by the association, including annual environmental clean-ups staged in April and August, again in conjunction with the council.

Plans were also in the pipeline, he said, to hold a street festival to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, in much the same way as the local community had marked Her Majesty’s Golden Jubilee 10 years ago with a successful festival run in conjunction with Banbridge Road Presbyterian Church.

Returning to the recent assault, Mr Halliday said the incident was not welcome and in was no way typical of the area; it should not have happened and was to be condemned; nor would Thornhill residents twant to see any further such incidents.

Anyone who saw the assault was urged to contact Police.

Mr. Halliday added that anyone in the area who had any issues to raise should bring them to the committee and every effort would be made to resolve them.

The Thornhill Community Association meets on the first Monday of every month in the community house at 40 Thornhill Drive from 7.30pm.
