Family man had a deep interest in vintage vehicles

MR Alfred Weir passed away at Craigavon Area Hospital on Sunday, 23rd December.

Alfie, as he was affectionately known, was the dearly loved husband of Myrtle and devoted daddy of Geoffrey, Amanda and Rodney.

He lived at 100 Rathfriland Road and was brought up in the Annaclone district, attending Ballynanny School.

After leaving education, he went to work in the farming community around the area and was then employed with the DoE as a lorry driver. He was out in all sorts of weather in winter with the snow plough and was employed with the Department until he retired with health problems.

Alfie’s main interest was centred around his home and family and it is there that his passing will be mostly felt. His hobbies were vintage vehicles of all sorts, including motorbikes, tractors and cars.

An outgoing man, he loved socialising and a was a member of Rathfriland Vintage Club and also Tanvally LOL No 683.

He was a member of the Select Vestry of his church where he played a key role in many of the activities.

Mr Weir is survived by his wife Myrtle; two sons, Geoffrey and Rodney; daughter, Amanda; daughter-in-law, Kellie; Amanda’s partner, Stephen, grandson, Ryan; brothers, David and Jim; sisters, Mrs Dorothy McKinstry, Mrs Jean Johnston and Mrs. Gertie Magill. To these and all other relatives sincere sympathy has been extended.

The funeral, which was largely attended, took place from his home on Boxing Day for a service in Annaclone Parish Church at which his minister, the Rev. D. Palmer, gave an inspiring address.

The hymns, ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’ and ‘Abide With Me’ were sung and Miss Sarah Hughes presided at the organ.

Interment took place in the adjoining churchyard and family flowers were placed on the grave. Donations in lieu of flowers are being sent to William Bell and Co, Funeral Directors, 23 Kenlis Street, Banbridge, for Annaclone Parish Church.
