Free internet access facility planned

COMING weeks are expected to see the launch in Dromore of a new facility aimed primarily at helping the area’s jobseekers and others who may lack ready access to the internet.

The project is the brainchild of Dromore In Action, whose Church Street premises will be home to three public access terminals, offering internet access free of charge for those who may need to research job opportunities, complete online applications etc.

Dromore In Action’s Paul McFarland explained that the group had already purchased the necessary equipment; all that remained was to iron out the details and co-ordinate getting the facility up and running. “We have all the infrastructure,” he said, “but we haven’t put it together just yet.

“We’re hoping to have three terminals in the office at Church Street and, depending on the availability of people to man it, we would be looking initially to offer access for about two hours a day, two days a week.”

Dromore In Action doesn’t intend the facility to offer individual users unlimited access, but rather an opportunity to complete specific tasks as they arise.

“It would be completely free to use,” said Mr. McFarland, “though, depending on demand, we might have to set a sensible time limit; it’s intended really for people who need to use the internet, but may not otherwise have access, to come in and use the terminals to do what they have to do.

“It’s about us being in the community, FOR the community, meeting a need by providing a service that’s maybe not widely available in Dromore at the minute.”

Dromore In Action has yet to finalise the opening times and, again depending on demand, initial provision may be broadened in future.

As to when the new service might be launched, Mr. McFarland said, “There’s a bit of work needs to be done but we would like to be up and running as soon as possible, certainly within a matter of weeks, rather than months.”
