Latest viaduct event a Children’s Hospice first

DROMORE viaduct is fast becoming the venue of choice for charity abseil events and the Northern Ireland Children’s Hospice is the latest to line up the one-time railway route for a high-rise fundraiser.

While a string of charities have enlisted the aid of the viaduct’s arches to help put a spring in their step, the upcoming event on Saturday, March 3, will be the Children’s Hospice’s first at the local landmark.

Organisers are hoping that combined with the personal challenge and rewarding experience involved, the impressive backdrop will add to the appeal of the fundraiser and they point out that Dromore Viaduct is ideal for abseil newcomers.

The charity’s Karen Dunlop said, “The prominent viaduct that once carried the GNRI railway line from Dromore to Banbridge/Newcastle across the River Lagan will provide a breathtaking and scenic challenge as participants drop over 74ft.

“The Children’s Hospice Abseil Challenge offers a rewarding experience and is a perfect opportunity for a personal challenge in this special Olympic year, while also helping to raise much needed funds for the Children’s Hospice services of care and support.”

She added, “I would encourage anyone with a spring in their step and an eye for a challenge in 2012 to sign up and join Children’s Hospice for this special event.

“The height of the viaduct also makes this a suitable challenge for anyone who has never abseiled before. Participants will be taken through all aspects of the abseil by experienced instructors and will be part of an event full of excitement and great team spirit.

“Children’s Hospice overwhelmingly relies on the support and generosity of the public and we urgently need that support more than ever. Caring is at the heart of everything we do and we would urge brave individuals to show they care too by donning their helmet and harness and stepping over this notable local landmark.”

The Children’s Hospice provides respite and end-of-life care to local life-limited children and young people, as well as providing support to the entire family.

Care is available both in the Children’s Hospice and also in the child’s own home.

“All donations and support really does make a difference towards the annual fundraising target of £2.5 million,” said Karen. “With limited places available, don’t delay in taking up the challenge and being part of the first ever Children’s Hospice team for this exciting event.

“All that is required is a £35 registration fee and to aim to raise a minimum sponsorship of £95; however all funds do not need to be raised prior to the event.
