Ministry says no to Ashfield and Magherally grants
THE Ministry of Development in 1969 rejected grant-aid applications for proposed sewerage schemes for Ashfield and Magherally.
In a letter to Banbridge Rural Council the ministry said it regretted being unable to accept the proposed schemes for grant-aid on the grounds that they were too expensive in relation to the number of exisiting properties to be served.
In the circumstances, it said, the council might wish to consider postponing the schemes, which could they be reconsidered if necessary in the light of future development.
The council’s Mr. Robert S. Hill wanted to know what was wrong that the council could get nowhere.
The schemes in question, he said, had been put forward some 18 months previously and the council was only then getting word that they had been turned down.
The engineer said the prevailing attitude had been to confine development to larger villages.
The council had 10 villages schemes approved, he said, but did not seem to be making the grade on this occasion.
He suggested the answer was firm proposals for housing which could then be related to sewerage.
