FOLLOWING the demise of Dromore's annual inter-schools sports day, this year's May Fair will include children's competitions as part of a wider 'Festival of Sport' running from May 13-16.
Dromore Athletics Club will be running a children's sports evening at Dromore Community Centre on Thursday, May 15 from 6.30pm.
It will be open to Dromore Central and St. Colman's Primary School pupils and all competitors and prizewinners are invi
ted to take part in the street parade during the Fair proper on May 17, where they will receive their awards.
A spokesperson for organisers said, "The idea for this festival was conceived by representatives from local community and sports clubs who are keen to see community sport activities such as a Children's Sports Day taking place in Dromore.
"Working in partnership with the Council, festival organisers wanted to develop a range of sports activities for young people that would complement the popular May Fair event."
Also on May 15 (7-9pm), Dromore Walking Club will be conducting a free, guided walking tour of Dromore town and surrounding area, beginning at Market Square and taking in local sites of historic interest, with a visit to McConville's Scutching Mill, to learn about the early stages of linen production, among the highlights.
Ahead of those events, Dromore Karate club will be hosting a demonstration open night in Dromore High School on Tuesday, May 13 (7-9pm).
"Everyone, aged from 6 to 60, is encouraged to come along and see the club members in action, demonstrating their fitness and self-defence skills," said the spokesperson.
On May 14 (8-10pm) Dromore Netball Club will be hosting an adult mixed doubles fundraising tournament in Dromore Community Centre, in aid of Cancer Research.
Then on May 16 (7-9pm)Dromore Amateurs Football Club will be running a football tournament at Dromore Community Centre. Young people aged 7-13 are invited to take part.
In an associated event later this month Dromore Rugby Club will be organising a Family Fun Day. The May 24 event will feature a mini rugby tournament, fun activities such as 'Soak the Coach', a barbecue and presentation ceremony.
Festival of Sport (May 13-16) awards will be presented at the May Fair itself, with all participants and award-winners invited to join in the parade, meeting at Dromore Central Primary School at 4.30pm.
The awards will be presented following the parade, at 5pm, in Market Square.
