CANNES THE SOUTH OF FRANCE BE THIS NICE?

IT'S a millionaires play-ground but a trip to the stunning Cote D'Azur need not break the bank - even if you do badly at Monte Carlo's casinos.

With the arrival of budget flights the South of France has become more accessible than ever and easyJet planes now sit side by side with the private jets at Nice airport.

And at just two and a half hours flying time from Belfast joining the jetset has never been easier.

With Monaco and Monte Carlo on one side and St Tropez and Cannes on the other Nice is the perfect base for exploring this stunning region.

Nice is a beautiful city with many areas to enchant the tourist. The old town area is like stepping back in time with narrow pedestrian streets perfect for a lazy day of exploring. Nestling beside the souvenir shops are some brilliant little boutique shops and family owned restaurants.

alive

And at night the area really comes alive with so many restaurants you will be completely spoilt for choice.

The world famous Promenade des Anglais has to be seen to be believed. It stretches for almost as far as the eye can see along Nice's stoney beach.

Here you will see the 'beautiful people' strutting their stuff as well as skaters, joggers and sun worshippers all competing to catch the eye.

There are private areas on the beach where a sun lounger will set you back almost 10 euros but there are also plenty of places free to use.

Just back form the Promenade is Nice's main shopping district and you will find all the big names such as Armani and Gucci but you will also find smaller boutiques with fashion to suit all budgets.

Like I said before Nice is the perfect base for exploring the Cote D'Azur. If you want to splash the cash you can jump into a cab or if you want to save a few euros it only takes 20 minutes on the train to reach Monaco.

From the train station it is a five minute walk to the marina where millions upon millions of pounds worth of yachts are moored while their owners no doubt enjoy a flutter in the casinos or shop in some of the uber-chic boutiques the city has to offer.

marina

For the likes of you and I there are plenty of places to eat and shops without breaking the bank. In the marina there are restaurants to suit all bank accounts where you can sit back, relax and indulge in a spot of people watching.

A 10 minute walk from the marina and you are into casino square as it's known in Formula One racing circles. The casino complex is one of the main attraction in Monaco and includes the Grand Thtre de Monte Carlo, an opera and ballet house, and the headquarters of the Ballets de Monte Carlo.

The square is another great place for a spot of people watching but a be prepared a drink here could set you back 10 euros.

Cannes and St Tropez are more of the same but for my money Monaco and Nice are where it's at on the Cote D'Azur.
