Success at archery event

THE Southern Trust Fit 4 U Project recently supported an Archery Competition for people with physical and/or sensory disabilities from across the Trust area.

The Fit 4 U Project is funded by the Public Health Agency and led by the Southern Health and Social Care Trust in partnership with Sport NI Active Communities Coaches from Banbridge District Council, Craigavon Borough Council and Armagh Council.

It aims to empower people with physical and/or sensory disabilities to improve their health through participation in a range of physical activity and leisure opportunities.

Mark Doran, individual group winner said: “Archery is an inclusive sport. It builds confidence and self-esteem. You play to enjoy it and if you win it is a bonus.”

Matthew McNicholl, Sport NI Active Communities Coach, explained: “Archery is becoming more popular through increased promotion of the sport. It was great to see so many individuals competing in the competition, many of whom had never done so before.”

Rhonda Richardson, Fit 4 U Project Officer, highlights the health benefits. “Archery is a sport that promotes co-ordination. Mentally it promotes a sense of achievement in attaining the target and socially it provides opportunity for fun and social interaction.”
