Anger at the moving of Market Square postbox

The decision to move the postbox from Market Square to the Banbridge Road '˜without notification' has been labelled '˜disgraceful'.

This postbox was moved despite a petition calling on it to remain in Market Square being signed by over 1000 people.

One local resident contacted the Dromore Leader to complain, she said: “I was shocked when I walked over to where the post box was to find it was no longer there. I then spoke with Paul Rankin the local councillor to learn that it had been removed the previous week with no consultation or warning.”

“This is a disgraceful decision and will inconvenience local business people based in the town centre and everyone else who is used to dropping in to post as letter or so.”

Alderman Paul Rankin said: “As elected reps we received no notification about the removal of this post box and there was no consultation carried out by Royal Mail.

“We subsequently learnt that the same post box had been relocated to the Supervalu Store on the Banbridge Road Dromore, where the post office is now situated.”

A Spokesperson for Royal Mail said that “it is very common for a postbox located outside a Post Office branch to be relocated when a Post Office branch moves to a new location.”

Royal Mail spokesperson, Morag Turnbull said: “The post box in Market Square was relocated to outside the new Post Office based in Supervalu following the relocation of the branch. Royal Mail will not be able to install a further post box in the town. We believe Dromore residents have many opportunities to access our boxes given where they are.”
