Bonamargy could be prime tourist asset - Cunningham

BALLYCASTLE councillor Dónal Cunningham (SDLP) has re-issued his call from last September seeking a closer working relationship with NIEA (Historic Monuments) to ensure better management and greater promotion of Bonamargy Friary in the town and to facilitate the use of the site as a prime tourist asset for the whole community.

“I welcome the decision to approve work to repair damage to the northern corner of the boundary wall and the removal of overgrown ivy form the perimeter wall but would seek to see greater ambition shown in the marketing the 15th Century Friary,” he said.

“Bonamargy is so full of history, mystery and folklore; we should be facilitating the use of the site as a prime tourist asset for the whole community.”

Independent Councillor Padraig Mc Shane said: “Not only is Bonamargy Friary an iconic part of our built heritage locally but it is also a graveyard an as such needs cared for in a manner befitting this status”.
