Delay in store’s construction ‘detrimental’ to town
THE council has welcomed the withdrawal of NIIRTA’s legal bid to stop Tesco building a supermarket at Bridgewater Park - but slammed as “detrimental” the delay caused by the judicial review application launched almost a year ago.
A spokesman for the council said the time since the application was approved in March 2011, and last week when NIIRTA announced they had decided to withdraw their judicial review application had harmed efforts to attract investment into the town.
He said, “The council welcomes the conclusion to the legal wrangle in relation to the development at Bridgewater Park and believes the hiatus in terms of decision making has been detrimental to attracting new investment to Banbridge town.
“This new development will bring major investment to the district and create new jobs for local people in the process. It will also help enhance the district’s infrastructure, strengthen the local economy and put Banbridge on a level playing field with neighbouring council areas.”
The spokesman added that the council will work with both developers and traders in the town centre to help boost trade in the area.
“The Council is keen to make sure that the new Tesco Extra store complements the retail offering in Banbridge town centre and plans to work with all parties to ensure that the new development at Bridgewater Park is mutually beneficial to all,” he said. “The council remains committed to supporting the development of a thriving local economy driven by town centre retail activity.”
