Drivers hit out online over parking rules

Last week the Leader reported that a number of local motorists have been ticketed after parking in the Gallows Street mouth of the town centre short-stay car-park and appeals have been reportedly rejected despite an element of confusion surrounding the ‘spaces’ in question.

Double yellow lines on the pharmacy side of the Gallows Street in-road end abruptly and locals have long felt free to park at the roadside, but, a grace period that heralded the transfer of off-road parking to the local authority ended some weeks ago.

Traffic wardens are now issuing tickets on the basis that car-park signage warns drivers to park only in marked spaces.

This was met with a strong reaction online and Aileen Gracey claimed she has never had a problem getting in or out of the car park.

She said: “For as long as this carpark has existed people have parked in that area. There would have been the odd tractor parked there too.

“Neither cars or tractors have ever prevented me from getting in or out of the other spaces.

“Just an easy target for the parking attendants if you ask me.

“If parking there causes issues then why werent the yellow lines painted there in the first place?”Other drivers felt parking attendants could be spending their time better.

Heather Herron said: “Omg!! Glad I read this. Anything for a £1 now. Total disgrace!!

“I’ve lived in Dromore 15 years and park there regularly.

“Rules probably made up by someone who never darkens Dromore!”

Nichola Jackson said: “To be honest I find the entrance across from the Ulster Bank where people park curb side to be more inconvenient.

“If you need to reverse out of a space you can’t as they are blocking the space you need to manoeuvre.”

Colin J Cunningham said: “Why do the parking attendants be up Gallows St beyond the barbers where there are no parking restrictions, to my knowledge?”
