Speaking after the Assembly debate the Upper Bann MLA said, “This has long been a campaign by my South Antrim colleague Trevor Clarke and I fully support this campaign and the appeal to the Justice Minister. The punishment must fit the crime and I welcome the fact that all parties supported the motion in the Assembly.

Animal cruelty is far too prevalent in society and there can be no excusing it or hiding from it. Since 2011 nearly 3 incidents of animal cruelty have been reported per day. This cannot go on and there must be pre-emptive action taken so that people do not think it is not a serious matter. We need to raise awareness of this issue.”
