The Hughes family from Banbridge and Gilford farmer, Harry McGaffin, featured amongst the awards at this year’s European Angus herd competition.

The Hughes family’s Milltown herd lifted the award for best stock bull and also picked up an award for best cow and calf while Harry McGaffin won the best cow award, picking up a new shield donated by the Hughes family as well as the class shield.

The top honour of best overall herd this year went to Hugh Dickson and family from Moneyreagh. The event, now into its second year, was sponsored by HVS Animal Health of Crossgar with judging carried out by Sam Thompson.

Presentations were made by Scottish European Angus breeder, Willie Lawson, who had travelled from Auchterarder in Perthshire to attend the awards ceremony and barbecue held at Harry McGaffin’s Blackberry Hill farm in Gilford. European Angus breeder, Andrew Magowan thanked everyone for participating in this year’s event and paid special tribute to judge, Sam Thompson, sponsor, David Ellwood of HVS Animal Health and to Willie Lawson for presenting the awards.
