Laurencetown Lenaderg and Tullylish Community Association celebrated its recent Queen’s Award for Voluntary service, the group equivalent of an MBE, with a fun packed street festival at Laurencetown Community Centre on Thursday July 30.
The street festival was preceded by the official award ceremony, attended by the Lord Lieutenant of County Down, Mr David Lindsay, who arrived in full ceremonial dress to carry out the honours.
Mr Lindsay was assisted during the occasion by Petty Officer, Ms Amy Atwell.
The ceremony took place in the community centre and was attended by, among others, the Lord Mayor for Armagh, Craigavon and Banbridge, Darryn Causby.
Dozens of LLTCA volunteers were in attendance and were heartily thanked by all involved for their dedicated service to delivering a multitude of activities from Laurencetown Community Centre, the heart of the community.
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award given to local volunteering groups in the UK to recognise outstanding work done in their own communities.
Following the ceremony, up to three hundred people enjoyed an evening of excellent musical entertainment, courtesy of the band ‘Curve’, and street entertainers.
The Lord Lieutenant spent time chatting to local residents and got a real feel for the strong community spirit that exists.
LLTCA chairperson, Jim Bell said: ‘We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful community centre to work out of and one that is highly valued by the whole community.
“Our volunteers are the lifeblood of this centre and it is because of their commitment and belief in local community development that we are being honoured tonight with this award.
“I want to thank Mrs Geraldine McCusker for nominating us, and the Lord Lieutantant, Mr David Lindsay, Mrs Fionnuala Cooke and Mr Walter Rader for considering LLTCA worthy of this award.’
