TULLYLISH footballer and co-founder of the Michaela Founation John McAreavey has paid tribute to a group of local men who will take on a mammoth challenge later this year in the hope they can raise £10,000 for charity.

Chris Nugent, Lorcan Quinn and Scott Arnold will join with friends John McCracken and Chris Gallagher in climbing the four highest peaks in Ireland and cycling more than 500 miles all in a gruelling six-day challenge.

The men, who will begin their task on September 1 are aiming to raise £10,000 for both Action Cancer and the Michaela Foundation.

A fundraising night to celelbrate their acheivements will be held in Banbridge Hockey Club on Saturday September 8, with live entertainment and prize-winning opportunities.

John, who set up the Michaela Foundation in memory of his beloved wife after her tragic death in Mauritius last year, said the challenge reflects some of the beliefs at the charity’s very core.

“On behalf of The Michaela Foundation, we are honoured to be working with the guys from the Peak to Peak challenge,” said John.

“The task ahead of them is no mean feat and is perfectly aligned to our ‘Life Without Limits’ motto. We hope that people can support this event in any way possible.”

Speaking while preparing for what will be a tough test of physical endurance, Chris said now is the perfect time in their lives to take on such a challenge.

“We feel that as we are all young, fit and healthy, now is the best possible time for us to take on this huge challenge.”

He explained that both cahrities are close to their hearts.

“We have been inspired and driven by personal experiences closely aligned to our causes and see this as a great opportunity to take positive action. Sadly there are not too many of us who are not affected by cancer in Northern Ireland, which is why we have chosen to support Action Cancer.

“Being in our mid-twenties, we are also keen to support youth projects that the work of The Michaela Foundation promotes.

“These two organisations have the sole purpose of improving and making a difference in people’s lives. Please donate and dig deep in support of our challenge, and for these two very worthwhile causes.”
