ACTION GROUP SCORES A HIT WITH CIVIC WEEK
LOCALS and visitors alike have been singing the praises of the Dromore In Action group for its recent revival of the town's Civic Week.
The 10-day round of festivities, restored to the social calendar earlier this month after a years-long absence, would appear to have been an unqualified success.
Town residents and visitors from neighbouring areas, including Hillsborough and Lisburn, have written to the The Leader to give Dromore In Action organisers a - they say well-deserved - pat on the back.
The youngest of several voluntary groups that between them seek to tackle the area's social, economic, policing and other issues, Dromore In Action has taken local leisure and entertainment under its umbrella.
Kicking off with the annual Autumn Leaves Social Club May Ball and wrapping up with a Festival of Praise in Market Square, the group's reborn Civic Week took in already popular events such as the annual Daffodil Tea and May Fair and added a range of others, a Mount Street soap-box derby and rally-car event at Quillyburn apparently among the greatest hits.
"Well done to Dromore In Action," said one satisfied 'customer', who found the time to attend almost every event, singling out the rally cars, soap-boxes and "value-for-money" Daffodil Tea for particular praise. "What a great week! Can't wait to next year.
"I was at all the events, with the exception of the Jo-Jingles for the Under 5s - too old!"
Said another, "Thank-you Dromore In Action. Someone had to start the ball rolling and have some events in our new town square. Now you have started, keep going. More! More! More!"
Yet another congratulated organisers on "such a fun-packed weeek", adding, "There was something for everyone, from young to old. My favourites were the rally cars and the soap-box race; they were class. Let's make it an annual event."
There was a little touch of Heaven in the closing event for at least one Dromore resident, who said, "Songs of Praise on the BBC better watch out; the choir from St. Colman's sounded as if a choir from Heaven had descended on the Square. A very moving and suitable way to end a perfect week."
Also to be found among the letters were hopes that more of the relative newcomers living in Dromore would join in next time around.
"I'm very glad," said one writer, "that someone took the time and initiative to organise a civic week for our entertainment; it was well organised, with good ideas.
"It was good to see the whole town joining in, although the 'blow-ins' were conspicuous by their absence; maybe next year? Well done Dromore In Action!"
