ANN LEADS 10 IN CHARITY RUN

DROMORE woman Ann McMillan had a busy weekend, celebrating her 40th birthday on Sunday, a day after running 10km in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ann wasn't alone in pounding the paths of Lurgan Park on Saturday morning, thanks to volunteers from Dromore Athletics Club and Dromore Karate Club.

In all, some 10 Dromore runners stepped up to the mark for a homegrown, charity fundraising event Ann initially proposed as a solo effort.

With the approach of her birthday, Ann asked family and friends, instead of giving her gifts, to sponsor her in a 10km charity run.

"'I' developed into 'we'," she said, "and 10 of us did the run; we all had sponsorship forms to raise a few pounds for a very good cause.

"Macmillan Cancer Support is a good organisation and they do a great deal for a lot of people."

Ann herself is no stranger to charity runs.

"I did the women's 5km race at Stormont last October," she said, "and I've done the Cancer Research Race for Life for the past two years."

That said, before Saturday, 5km was Ann's greatest test; the weekend saw her take on double the distance, which translates to 6.2 miles.

Not surprisingly then, she has been training for the run since last August.

Speaking ahead of the weekend's fundraising event, Ann said she was a little bit nervous, but mainly looking forward to it.

"I've had a lot of support," she said, "and I've been getting a great response to the fundraising; people have been very generous."

By her own admission stepping it up a gear instead of slowing down with the arrival of her 40th birthday, Ann isn't ruling out the possibility of greater challenges to come.

"It would have to be a half-marathon next," she said, "13 miles; who knows, maybe I'll take that on in the future?"

In the meantime, Ann is asking anyone who would even now like to support her efforts on behalf of Macmillan to get in touch with the charity itself to make a donation.
