BRETHREN HOPING FOR AN AREA AWASH WITH COLOUR
LOCAL brethren are hoping the flowering of a new initiative will have Dromore and Dromara awash with colour this coming July, and that colour is, of course, Orange.
Lodges in the area are busily getting behind the Orange Order's latest move, to seed Northern Ireland with thousands of Orange Lilies (pictured).
Dromore solicitor and Listullycurran Orangeman Drew Nelson revealed that the Institution had imported some 60,000 Orange Lily bulbs from Holland.
The bulbs are now being sold by lodges throughout Ireland, including Donegal, Cavan and Monaghan in the Republic.
According to Mr. Nelson, Grand Secretary of the Grand Orange Lodge of Ireland, demand for the bulbs is strong in the wider Dromore and Dromara areas.
Mr. Nelson explained where the decision to go into the lily trade stemmed from.
"It's part of an organised campaign," he said, "to encourage poeople to plant Orange Lilies as a reminder of the symbolic importance of that flower to the Protestant community."
The lilies on sale are of the type Lilium Pixie Orange and can be planted from March onwards, in plenty of time, said Mr. Nelson, for the Twelfth.
They are available, at a cost of 5 for a pack of six, from any local lodge member, or, alternatively, contact Mr. Billy Campbell on 9753 2861.
Each pack of lily bulbs includes two printed cards, the one, bearing the legend, 'The Fields of Ulster - Where the Orange Lily Grows', providing instructions on planting and care.
The other offers contact information for anyone not already a member of the Orange Order and interested in joining a local lodge.
