Can you help Joan with her Dromore search?

A WOMAN who has been living in Norway for more than half a century is hoping Leader readers can help her learn more about her Dromore family and identify their ‘Mariville’ home in town.

Joan Hay (nee Kernohan), for 54 years now a resident of Norway, has made her own enquiries, but without success.

She says, “My mother’s name was Gladys Agnes Kernohan and her maiden name was Spence; she was the daughter of Mr. David J. Spence, who owned a linen and stitching business in Dromore.

“They lived in Dromore in a house called ‘Mariville’.

“During my last visit to Northern Ireland I visited Dromore and while there made enquiries as to the whereabouts of ‘Mariville’.

“Unfortunately the few local people I met had neither heard of the family nor of the house, which I understand was divided into two after the family died out.

“I have newspaper cuttings from the Dromore Weekly Times describing the career and death of Mr. Robert Spence in 1908 and his son Mr. David J. Spence in 1911.

“I would very much like to see what remains of the house, if it still exists, and learn more of the family.”

Mrs. Hay is in Belfast this week, until Monday, June 25, and is staying at the Malone Lodge Hotel.

Alternatively, if anyone can help Mrs. Hay, they can forward any information to The Leader and we will in turn forward it to her.
