CARSON LIFTS ONE OR INAUGURAL VOYAGER AWARDS
DROMARA'S Carson Harte, of Cambodia Trust, has won recognition for his outstanding contribution within the charitable sector.
Carson won the 'Leading on Partnership and Collaboration' category at this year's inuagural Voyager Awards.
Hosted by CO3 - the organization for Northern Ireland's third sector leaders - the awards were the highlight of CO3's two-day Leadership Voyage Conference at the City Hotel, Derry.
The Leader recently reported that Carson was among the professionals shortlisted for the awards, which recognise the dedication, commitment and innovation of leaders working with Northern Ireland's voluntary and community groups.
At the time CO3 director Majella McCloskey congratulated the shortlisted professionals; the standard of entry had been extremely high, she said, and to reach that stage was an achievement in itself.
On the day Carson was one of 11 leaders from Northern Ireland's community and voluntary sector recognised for their dedication, professionalism and talent.
The Awards which were hosted by television presenter Donna Traynor.
Ms. McCloskey said afterwards, "The awards are a celebration of the exceptional leadership that has been shown in the service of our community.
"It is heartening to see such great work across a variety of charities with the leader of a homeless charity, a community arts group and an organisation which campaigns for children with autism all being honoured."
Meanwhile, award-winning international speakers joined 200 of Northern Ireland's Community and Voluntary sector leaders for the conference, to address the many challenges the sector faces.
Reebok Human Rights Award winner Oona Chatterjee of Make the Road and Sandy Houston of the Metcalf Foundation were among the speakers.
"There can be no doubt," said Ms. McCloskey "about the challenges that the community and voluntary sector is facing in today's economic climate and CO3's conference has played a very important role in providing insights, sharing of ideas and motivating the sector to make Northern Ireland a better place to live . .
" . . It is worth pointing out that the track record of our leaders speaks for itself. As a sector we are proud of the scale of our contribution within Northern Ireland society.
"The sector will continue to deliver as it has done through previous recessions and the dark days of conflict.
"I would like to call on our politicians to recognise the role and contribution of third sector leaders and their organisations in delivering a better society for all in Northern Ireland."
