CHARITY BOOST AS GROUP READIES A RETURN TO ACTION
THE Dromore In Action Group has handed over more than £1,000 to Mr. Billy McCrory's children's cancer charity, 'Shine a Light'.
It was at a social night in The Ranch on Saturday that the group presented Mr. McCrory with a cheque for 1,170, proceeds of a string of fundraisers that peppered its local events programme last year.
Events included charity breakfasts, social dances and an Auto-test Rally organised at Quillyburn Industrial estate as a community safety event in partnership with Police and the Fire and Rescue Service.
Also adding to the total raised was a ballot for a helicopter ride, the winner generously donating the prize to Kirsten Brown, a member of the Shine a Light family.
Funded by the International Fund for Ireland Communities in Transition Programme, which is supported through the Community Foundation for Northern Ireland, Dromore In Action is described simply as a group of local people coming together to improve the area.
Their aims include improving community relations, regenerating the town and achieving positive change and development.
As well as charity fundraising, last year saw the group organise a range of successful civic events, including the newly revivied Civic Week itself, in May, and the November Fair.
Dromore's Got Talent, a soap-box race, vintage vehicle cavalcade and family activities, were among the features on the various festival programmes.
"The group would like to thank all residents who took part in their events for their support and Roy Orr for the kind donation of the Helicopter ride for the ballot," said Dromore In Action's Fianne Ewart, Community Development Officer.
Future events planned by the group include this year's Civic Week, which will start on May 1 with a continental market in Market Square and a children's fun day at Dromore Community Centre.
Throughout the week there will be a wide range of events including festival of praise, parade of old vehicles, talent night, story telling, 'Auto test' rally night and the popular soap box race, in which teams are invited to beat the current winners 'The Firemen'.
