Congratulations for local professor

JO-ANNE Dobson MLA has congratulated Professor Deirdre Heenan, Provost of the University of Ulster’s Magee campus upon her appointment to the Irish President’s Council of State.

Originally from Banbridge and now living in Londonderry, Professor Heenan is an authority on social policy issues, author of numerous books and studies and widely known locally as a frequent broadcaster on radio and television.

Commenting Mrs Dobson said, “I have known Deirdre since our school days when we attended Banbridge Academy. I was delighted to hear that Deirdre has been appointed to this prestigious position and wish her every success as she takes up the role of providing counsel to The Irish President.

“It is always good that a known local person, such as Deirdre, a successful academic female, has been appointed to positions of influence such as this.” “

Working meetings will be called by the President for consultation under the terms of the Irish Constitution. The Council consists of a number of government officials, as well as certain former office holders and up to seven individuals of the president’s own choosing, one of whom is Deirdre.
