CROWDS FLOCK TO PARK 'PICNIC'

DROMORE'S weekend 'Picnic in the Park' has been hailed a huge success, with larger numbers than expected flocking to town from across the district and beyond.

According to the district council organisers some 1,500 people descended on Dromore for what has been described as "an unforgettable afternoon of family entertainment".

A pay-off on the council's pledge to spend in Dromore money earmarked for this year's cancelled May Fair, the event reportedly met with widespread approval.

"Event-goers were full of praise for the entertainment programme and welcoming atmosphere on the day," a council spokesperson said.

The audience was apparently particularly impressed by the skill and technique of a group of young Dromore dancers who, despite having only weeks to practice their routine, put on "an incredible show".

Supported by the EU's PEACE III Programme, managed by the Special EU Programmes Body and delivered by the Southern Partnership, the 'Picnic' also saw the crowds rock to performances by local bands 'Chunk of Funk' and 'Last Known Addiction'.

Parents were said to have been pleased that the event catered for children of all ages, with many activities - firm family favourites - available to keep children ranging from toddlers and teenagers entertained.

They included funfair rides, face-painting, balloon modelling, craft workshops, climbing wall, horse-and-cart rides and drumming and DJ workshops.

Council Events Officer Carolyn Dougan, said, "This is the first time the Council has hosted an event in this superb outdoor venue and judging by the sea of smiling faces witnessed on the day, it is fair to say a good time was had by all.

"It was wonderful to see so many people from different areas and backgrounds coming together to sample some of the best talent that the local area has to offer.

"Like past events held in Dromore, 'Picnic in the Park' was just as successful in terms of bringing people together to build a more unified community."
