- Dutch woman taken to Letterkenny General Hospital after fall
A woman, understood to be a Dutch national, was involved in a dramatic rescue near Lough Salt, between Milford and Termon, when she was winched to safety by the Irish Coastguard Rescue Helicopter yesterday afternoon.
The woman, who is in her fifties, was hill-walking with a number of friends when she slipped and fell, resulting in a suspected fractured ankle. Her friends immediately contacted the emergency services realising that they would be unable to get her off the mountain themselves and that daylight would soon be fading.
A spokesperson for the Irish Coastguard at Malin Head told this newspaper: “We received an emergency call at around 2.40pm yesterday afternoon advising us that a victim was in difficulty in the mountains adjacent to Lough Salt.
“We immediately called in our rescue helicopter, but because of the nature of the terrain and the difficulty in landing the helicopter, it was decided to winch the woman, who has a suspected fractured ankle, to safety and brought her to Letterkenny General Hospital.” It’s understood the victim was in a comfortable condition.
