DROMORE IN ACTION HATCHES NEW PLANS
DROMORE in Action has met with the man behind crowd-pullers including Belfast's 'Tall Ships' as it plans major new events of its own.
The organiser of highlights such as Fermanagh's 'Lady of the Lake Festival' sat in on a recent meeting of the local action group's newly formed events sub-committee, lending his ear and expertise to plans for a continental market and a large-scale outdoor concert.
It's early days and the group is playing its cards close to its chest, but there are high hopes of establishing the newcomers as major additions to the town's growing calendar of events.
Chair of the new sub-committee, Mrs. Helen McFadden, said, "There is the hope that we might have an outdoor concert in the summer and if all goes to plan we will be holding a continental market in the Square as part of the civic week."
Other factors aside, the sub-committee's plans will of course have to be brought before the parent group before they can get off the ground.
In the meantime, preparations for remaining civic week attractions are well underway, with the return of some swiftly established favourites on the cards.
This year's event will be only the second annual civic week since its recent revival, but organisers are hoping to repeat last year's success with the soapbox derby, vintage cavalcade, children's sports and talent contest.
"The soapbox derby was a big hit," said Helen, who stressed that fun was at the heart of the festival and all its aspects. "It was very, very popular; I've already had one of last year's teams telling me about their plans to modify their 'vehicle' for this year."
According to Helen there's a planned return for The Festival of Praise, another "very, very succesful" civic week event last year, and of course it's proposed that the new continental market take place under the civic week unbrella.
Plans are in the pipeline too for a night of variety entertainment courtesy of locals themselves.
"Maybe someone plays the guitar, or sings, or could read a poem," said Helen. "It's just about whatever skill or talent, within reason, that people might contribute to a good night's craic."
Civic Week will again take place to roughly coincide with the May Fair promoted by Banbridge District Council and now firmly established as an annual highlight.
Later in the year, Dromore In Action will also be presenting the town's third annual November Fair.
First up for the group this year though is a charity cheque presentation in February; it will be handing over more than 1,000 to Mr. Billy McCrory of the Shine a Light charity.
