EMILY HITS THE BIG SCREEN

DROMORE girl Emily Smith has helped produce and star in a film which will be reviewed by some of the biggest names in the film industry

The 16-year-old has been deaf since she was five and last year she got involved in a NDCS scheme to produce a film through their Summer Film Project with support from BBC Blast and First Light Movies.

The end product, Flukey Finn, has now been nominated in the Best Comedy category at the First Light Awards 2010, a competition which recognises the UK's young filmmakers.

It will be reviewed by a panel of celebrity judges, including Alan Parker, Joseph Fiennes and Sam Mendes. On Tuesday 2 March, winners in each category will be announced at a star-studded awards gala which will be hosted by BBC's Dick and Dom at London's Odeon, Leicester Square.

Emily's mum, Alison, explained that her daughter was involved in all aspects of the production of the film.

"The kids on the course go to the BBC studios and work with the staff there for a week," she said.

"They write the script and Emily was one of the actresses in the film - I think she ended up playing three roles in total. As well as that they were taught camera work and thinks like make-up.

"The group was made into teams of two and each pair had to edit part of the film too.

"It was a great experience for Emily. The project takes kids up to the age of 18 so she has another two years to do it.

"When she was younger she was really embarrassed by her deafness and would pretend to hear us talk when we knew she couldn't. But thanks to the project she has made loads of new really good friends who she stays in contact with."

The film, which is about an unlucky in love teenager, got it's premiere in Belfast recently and it is also set to make an appearance on the small screen too.

"The cast and all their families were invited down to the Odyssey in Belfast to see the film," added Alison. "It was really good, I have to admit!

"Last year they showed the film from the project on TV in October so they will hopefully show it at around the same time this year."
