'GCSE RESULTS SHOW WISDOM OF POST-16 APPROVAL'

DROMORE High School pupils' newly issued GCSE results support Stormont Education Minister Caitriona Ruane's decision to grant the school's longstanding wish for post-16 provision, a spokesperson said this week.

There were congratulations for students and staff alike as it emerged that some 65% of the school's intake achieved five or more A*-C grades, while the performance gap between boys and girls - subject to targeted measures at Dromore High in recent years - remained "fairly static".

Amid hopes that High School students would succeed in moving on to their chosen school or college, there was an obvious delight that next year's planned introduction of post-16 provision would spare students that concern.

"We are delighted with our results so far," the spokesperson said. "The Board of Governors and Principal congratulate our students and staff on this standard of achievement and hope that the students gain access to the school or college of their choice, something they will not have to worry about this time next year.

"Using the pure GCSE standard, without massaging or including any other results, 99 students have 5+ A*-Cs; this approximates to 65% of our intake. By the time we include all our other results this figure will approximate over 70%.

"Once again we have hit all our targets – school and specialist school – and as our teachers prepare to deliver post-16 courses next year, we know that the excellent teaching and support which bring about this sort of result will be a cornerstone of course delivery."

The margin between boys and girls this year again favoured the girls, but it was a much narrower gap than when at its widest.Said the spokesperson, "The difference between girls' and boys' performance remains fairly static at about eight per cent in favour of the girls.

"The gap continues to fluctuate over the years but it remains substantially lower than the highest recorded figure of 20%."

She added, "These results affirm the decision made by the minister to allow post-16 courses to be delivered at Dromore High School.

"We look forward to receiving our first A-level students next year and are preparing course materials well in advance of their arrival.

"As we progress through this academic year we will keep the public informed of our decisions and plans."
