Givan backs early cancer detection campaign

LAGAN Valley MLA Paul Givan has voiced his support for a Cancer Research campaign after attending a Stormont event highlighting the importance of early detection.

The DUP Assemblyman recently joined Cancer Research UK staff, clinicians and patients to learn more about how people in Northern Ireland could spot the signs and symptoms of the disease at an early stage.

“When cancer is diagnosed at an early stage,” he later said, “treatment is often simpler and more likely to be effective.

“I wholeheartedly support Cancer Research UK’s call to spot cancer as soon as possible. Unfortunately many families across Northern Ireland are affected by cancer and early detection can save lives.

“The work carried out in Lagan Valley by Cancer Research UK is very valuable and I would urge anyone who has any concerns about potential risk to contact their GP or Cancer Research UK for further information about early detection.”

Cancer Research UK’s Public Affairs Manager, Vicky Crichton, said the charity was delighted to have Mr Givan helping to spread the word.

“More people than ever are now surviving cancer,” she said, “but we know that further cancer deaths could be prevented each year if more cancers were diagnosed at an early stage.

“If you notice any unusual or persistent changes in your body, visit your GP without delay. If it is something serious then finding it early could make all the difference.”
