GOOD TURNOUT AS SIR KNIGHTS UNFURL NEW BANERETTE
A GOOD turnout was reported in Dromore last Wednesday as Sir Knights of Lower Iveagh Royal Black District Chapter No 1 gathered to unfurl a new district bannerette.
The new bannerette replaces one believed to have been unfurled around 1969 and last repaired in 1982.
Spectators were scattered along the route as the district's 12 preceptories made their way from the Orange Hall, through town and on to the field at Lurgan Road.
Ahead of the event the district had extended a public invitation and a number went along to the field on the night.
Local Sir Knights were also joined there by senior figures in the Royal Black Institution.
Worshipful District Master, Sir Knight William Hobson, welcomed all attending, while Sir Knight Frank Wallace chaired proceedings and Aughnaskeagh Silver Band led the praise.
The opening hymn was followed with prayer by Imperial Grand Chaplain, Sir Knight Raymond Adams, and a scripture reading by District Registrar and Past District Master, Sir Knight Colin Cunningham.
Mrs. Eileen Hobson, wife of the Worshipful District Master, unfurled the new bannerette, dedicated by the Sir Knight Adams, who addressed the gathering.
Miss Ruth Cunningham made a presentation to Mrs. Hobson and in turn receiving a present from Deputy District Master, Sir Knight Mervyn McKinley.
Worshipful County Grand Master, Sir Knight John Smyth, spoke next, ahead of main guest speaker, Sovereign Grand Master, Sir Knight Miller Farr QPM.
District Treasurer and Past District Master, Sir Knight James Wilkinson, made an appeal, Aughnaskeagh Silver Band and Waringsford Pipe Band playing a selection of tunes as the collection was taken up.
Sir Knight McKinley proposed a vote of thanks, seconded by Past District Master, Sir Knight George McLoughlin.
The final hymn followed the Chairman's closing remarks, Sir Knight Adams offering the closing prayer and benediction ahead of the national anthem, led by Aughnaskeagh Silver.
Sir Knights them paraded back through town to the Orange Hall.
Also on the night, the Sovereign Grand Master presented a 60-year jewel to Sir Knight Samuel Malcomson of Drumiller RBP 283.
Lower Iveagh Royal Black District Chapter No 1 thanks Mr. William Draffin, for the use of the field, Banbridge District Council, for the use of a PA system, Dromore Red Cross for first-aid cover, Mr. Raymond McKee, for the use of his lorry, and the police, for traffic arrangements.
