Historic topic for beekeepers
BEES and Beekeeping in Ancient Ireland is the title of Valerie Hall’s talk to Dromore Beekeepers Association at its upcoming January meeting.
A spokesperson said, “How appropriate to start off the New Year by looking back at the origins of Bees and Beekeeping in Ireland and how appropriate for Dromore, as it has its Association apiary in the centre of a ring fort or rath dating back to the first millenium AD.
“It will be interesting to hear about life and farming on these intriguing archaeological sites so long ago.”
Valerie Hall is Professor Emerita of Palaeoecology at Queen’s University Belfast and a novice beekeeper. Her interests in the Irish environments of the past and archaeology are strengthened by her lifelong passion for botany and communicating science to non-specialists.
Valerie’s lecture will consider the natural history of the honey bee in Ireland over the last 11,000 years and the archaeological and early historic Irish evidence for beekeeping.
“There should be something for everyone who enjoys the history of bees and beekeeping,” the spokesperson said.
The meeting will take place in the Science Research Centre, Dromore High School on Tuesday 17 January at 7.30PM. All Beekeepers and aspiring beekeepers welcome.
