HISTORY GROUP GEARS UP FOR VILLAGE FESTIVAL

DROMARA Local History Group is gearing up to play its part in the forthcoming village festival after marking what members have hailed another successful year.

The group traditionally organises several historical bus trips during the popular annual festival, but has this year announced a change in its plans.

The group will be holding a single, comprehensive bus tour just ahead of the festival proper, though its presence will still be felt during the main event.

"During the festival week we normally run a few bus trips," said the group's Joan Browne, "but this year we are having one big one before the festival week itself, on May 31, visiting Melifort Abbey, the Knowth Centre and the Battle of the Boyne site and visitors' centre.

"We will also he holding events on a couple of evenings during festival week."We'll be having a talk on June 10 in the Lagan Park Centre, where Stephen Cameron will be speaking on the Princess Victoria Disaster and then, on Friday, June 13, there'll be a demonstration of churning and butter-making, again at the Lagan Park Centre."

programme

Looking back on a packed programme for the thriving group over the last 12 months, Joan added, "We have completed another successful year of events. These have included Philip Orr speaking on The Abolition of the Slave Trade - the Ulster Debate, Roddy Hegarty on the Flight of the Earls, Professor Chris Shaw on Natural Drugs, Valerie Adams, from the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland, on genealogy, former Queen Alexandra nurse Betty Boyce on Wartime Memories, Ernie Cromie on County Down Airfields and Local Air-crash Sites and Mark Thompson on Dawn of the Ulster Scots."

The group's forthcoming May 31 bus tour is open to anyone.

The cost of the trip is 35 all in, including an evening meal and anyone who is interested in taking part should contact Joan Browne on 028 9753 2331.
