LOCAL BANDS SHINE ON WORLD STAGE

LOCAL pipe bands have covered themselves in glory on the international stage after gathering in Glasgow recently to contest this year's World Championships.

Upper Crossgare, from outside Dromara and boasting members from throughout the local area, took the World Champion Band and Drum Corps titles in Grade 4B, a feat matched in Grade 4A by Gransha Pipe Band.

Individuals shone too, with Kinallen's Alicia Dickson, of Matt Boyd Memorial, coming third in the Adult Drum Majors' contest.

Their achievements came hot on the heels of successes in the recent European Championships at Stormont, where Upper Crossgare won in Grade 4B, Gransha won in Grade 4A and Alicia was, again, third, in the senior section.

Bands from elsewhere in Banbridge District were also among the top performers at the World Championships.

Loughbrickland's Geoghegan Memorial took the World Champion Band title in Grade 3B, a repeat of their earlier European win in the same grade, while the band's Samantha Gordon, from Banbridge, won the World Champion Drum Major title in the Juvenile Grade, after taking second place in the European Championships.

L. Hanna of Drumlough Pipe Band was fourth in the World Championships Juvenile Grade. Rathfriland outfit Moneygore - third in Grade 4A at the European event - came second in the same grade at Glasgow Green, and Zoe McDowell of Lisnamulligan, also Rathfriland, was fifth in the Drum Majors' Junior Grade, having previously taken third place in the European event.

Also, Lisburn's Field Marshall Montgomery Pipe Band were runners-up in the Word Champions Grade 1.

Secretary of the Royal Scottish Pipe Bands Association (Northern Ireland), David Scott, said Northern Ireland bands remained among the most competitive in the world, bringing home a lot of silverware and assuring the province of its rightful place on the world stage.
