ONE-DAY CAFE TO OPEN IN AID OF CHARITY

A GROUP of Dromore women is going into the cafe business, for one day only, in an effort to raise cash for a cancer charity.

Members of the 10-strong group will put their cooking skills to the test in aid of Friends of the Cancer Centre when they open their 'One Day Caf' at Dromore's First Presbyterian (Non-Subscribing) Church Hall on Friday, March 12.

From morning until teatime, the group will serve teas, coffees, lunches, brunches, soups and sandwiches in the Rampart Street hall, in aid of a cause which they say is close to the heart of their community.

The group's Elizabeth Rutherford said cancer touched so many lives that most people were only too happy to have an opportunity to help.

"We've had fantastic support from the entire community in Dromore," she said. "We have been fundraising for 'Friends' in a number of ways over the last year and our donation total has just topped 6,000; that includes our first fundraising 'brunch' last year, plus some other projects.

"It also includes great donations from local businesses, including Public Image hairdressers and Mulholland's Bar in the town. Thyme Square, the restaurant in the town centre, is planning a table quiz and supper on 28 April, so the funds raised by local businesses just seem to keep on growing.

"With everyone being so generous we ladies felt we had to come up with another scheme, so we're all frantically sorting recipes for our event on March 12."Despite the continuing generosity locally, Elizabeth and the others are well aware of the financial pressures posed by the recession.

"We don't like to ask for too much, too often," she said, "but we reckon people are always very happy to buy a home-baked traybake or to enjoy a home-cooked lunch in the church hall.

"Last year we did a roaring trade from the minute we opened the doors at 10am until we closed, exhausted, around 4pm; we even did a great carry-out trade for shops and businesses in the town centre."

Calling on as many people as possible to drop in and support a worthwhile cause, Elizabeth added an extra appeal, for more fundraisers.

"We're also looking for volunteers to join our group and help now and in the future," she said. “I know from personal experience how nice it is to be able to put a little bit back into your community, particularly at a time of life when perhaps you have more free time than before, but it is also a great way to meet people and make new friends.

“Anyone who wants to find out about helping can come along on March 12 and we’ll be only too happy to welcome them.”

A delighted Colleen Shaw of Friends of the Cancer Centre thanked the group for all it had done and continued to do for cancer patients and their families; all the money it raised would contribute to the care and treatment of cancer patients in the community.

“Community support is vital,” she said, “and we are confident that the people of Dromore will be flocking to the ‘One Day Caf’ and will show their customary generosity.

“Certainly they are being given an amazing lead by a team of ladies whose commitment and enthusiasm are as admirable as their capacity for hard work.”
