PLEA FOR DROMORE TRADERS TO GET INVOLVED IN EVENTS
DROMORE traders at odds with the town's annual festivals programme should get involved and help shape events for the benefit of their businesses.
That's the message from organisers trying to sell dissenting local traders on the value of Dromore's landmark social events.
It comes after town traders reportedly snubbed a recent meeting of the Dromore In Action group, driving force behind a number of annual events, including the relatively recently launched November Fair and the newly revived Civic Week.
According to local publican Mrs. Helen McFadden, who chairs the Dromore In Action's newly formed events sub-committee, not a single trader, herself aside, attended the meeting, at which the group laid the foundations for this coming year's programme.
"Every one of them got a written invitation to come to the meeting," she said, "and not one appeared; the traders were given that chance."
Mrs. McFadden has previously criticised many Dromore people for preferring to complain about the town's shortcomings rather than take advantage of what is on offer.
Her comments have included traders, notably those - she says few - among them who traditionally protest over events such as the November Fair.
In praising those traders who supported last year's fair, she had a message at the time for those who didn't.
"To the one or two businesspeople who always complain about the fair," she said, "perhaps if they would join in the fun of the fair it would mean more benefit for their businesses."
With plans for a continental market as part of this year's Civic Week giving rise to predictions of more complaints, that's essentially the message again aimed at those same businesses.
It comes, though, with an appeal to all local traders to air their views and get in on the ground floor in helping to plan an events programme that will benefit everyone.
