Police in trailer marking scheme

DROMORE Neighbourhood Policing Team recently visited Rathfriland Farmers Mart as part of E District’s Trailer Marking Initiative.

Eleven trailers belonging to members of the local rural and farming community were marked by neighbourhood officers.

The trailer marking scheme was launched in Banbridge district (covering Banbridge, Dromore, Rathfriland and Gilford) in February 2012 and is available, at no cost, to anyone living in the district.

Constable Alex Swan, Dromore NPT, said, “The trailer marking scheme is another tool to help us prevent and detect rural crime.

“The marking process involves a unique ID mark consisting of a series of letters and numbers being painted on a trailer in an easily visible area using specialist paint and stencils.

“The trailer owner’s details and ID mark will be recorded and held on a PSNI database which can then be checked if a trailer is seen on the road or in a location at a time that’s unusual.

“We hope that this marking initiative will act as a deterrent to anyone considering stealing trailers and will also allow us to easily check if a trailer has been stolen or is being used without the owner’s permission.”
