SINN FEIN HAIL'SIGNIFICANT GAINS'

SINN Fein's candidate Paul Gribben has described the number of first preference votes and transfers he received in last week's by-election as 'very encouraging.'

Mr Gribben continued: "I would like to pay tribute to my election team who worked so hard during an extensive canvas of the constituency and my election agent, Councillor Dessie Ward, whose advice and guidance proved invaluable.

"I wish to also thank everyone who voted for me in this by-election and I believe that Sinn Fin's increased share of the vote is very encouraging. It means we are very well placed to make further gains in future elections and significantly increase our representation on Banbridge District Council.

"Whilst the media's focus in this election has been on the battle within Unionism, no one should underestimate the significance of this result for Sinn Fin," Mr Gribben continued.

"My party has for the first time in Dromore, surpassed the SDLP, and there is no doubt that we can build on this result. Our focus will be on working hard on the ground on a range of local issues right across this large rural constituency and I have no doubt we can increase our mandate further thus ensuring there is a radical pro-agreement republican voice representing Nationalists on Banbridge District Council.

"Councillor Dessie Ward has shown how one Sinn Fin councillor can make a real and meaningful difference and what this latest poll shows is that the work of our Assembly Members and Ministers is being recognised and appreciated by an increasing number of voters who are voting for my party.

"This week's result is a further vindication of Sinn Fin's work at a local and national level," he concluded.
