SPEED RAMP PROTESTERS COME IN FOR A 'POUNDING'

THERE was a declaration of support from Dromore's Pound Hill this week for the Diamond Road resident who spoke out in defence of speed ramps in the area.

Pound Hill and Diamond Road were the subject in recent weeks of complaints, aired by local councillors, that there were too many, too high, traffic-calming ramps in the area.

Local farmers reportedly complained to Councillor David Herron that the ramps were damaging trailers, while others were said to be travelling into town by tractor because of a risk to their cars; there were questions too over the extent of public consultation ahead of the scheme.

But last week a Diamond Road resident insisted that if the ramps could save even one life, drivers would have to learn to live with them. He added that, as a resident of the area, he had received from Roads Service a detailed drawing of the proposed scheme, advising him of the deadline for lodging any objections.

And now another "content enough" local, has confirmed consultation took place well in advance of the scheme.

The Pound Hill resident said there was no difficulty for even low-profile vehicles in negotiating the ramps if they approached at a "sensible" speed.

"In addition to the resident of Diamond Road being content enough with the ramps," he said, "I, as a resident of Pound Hill, am also satisfied with them.

"I see vehicles of all sizes and shapes negotiating the ramps without catching on them, even low sports-type vehicles.

"If driven over the ramps at a sensible speed I don't find any problem with them."

As to the number of ramps involved, the Pound Hill resident said there were "just as many ramps, of similar dimension" in Lisburn's Benson Street area.

He added, "I can not speak for other residents of this area, but can confirm that I was consulted well in advance on the matter. Like the other resident, I too feel safety comes first."
