DROMORE residents are being urged to make more use of the local community centre as the town looks set to score almost £20,000 worth of cosmetic surgery on the sports and leisure front.

It is recommended the district council stump up a total of 19,842 for two separate projects, one vital to the plans of local football team, Dromore Amateurs, the other a job last done at Dromore Community Centre more than 10 years ago.

Councillors were informed of the need for some 10,423 to meet "an urgent need" for work to wooden floors in the community centre.

Floors in the sports hall, first-floor landing and activity room need to be sanded and resealed with an additional remarking of lines required in the sports hall.

It is understood the work was last carried out 12 years ago.

Dromore Councillor Carol Black welcomed the recommendation, brought before, and approved by, the leisure and development committee, to fund what were described as essential refurbishment works.

With that welcome came her encouragement for more people to use the facility.

Meanwhile, 9,419 is the amount needed for work to upgrade Dromore's Ferris Park and bring it up to scratch with Irish Football Association requirements.

By May 14 this year the park must comply with the IFA Intermediate League requirements to allow Dromare Amateurs to be eligible for consideration for the 2010-11 season.

A meeting was held on site with representatives of the IFA and Dromore Amateurs, identifying the necessary work to achieve compliance.

Planned work includes utilising the existing pavilion, constructing a fence/path from the back of the pavilion, around the western perimeter to the pitch and minor works to dugouts and the perimeter.

Councillors were advised that as a landowner the Southern Edudation and Library Board had been asked for a view on the option and for the necessary approvals.

It is recommended the council agree to undertake the necessary work to achieve IFA compliance prior to the May 14 deadline.
