STUDENTS 'RUSH' TO DO BUSINESS
DROMORE High School pupils were taking care of business when they attended a recent trade fair at Craigavon's Rushmere Shopping Centre.
The budding entrepreneurs staff the High School's Young Enterprise Company, 'Success in Hand', one of a number of school businesses promoting their wide range of products at the event.
The fair was organised for schools taking part in the Young Enterprise Northern Ireland Company and Team Programmes - funded by the Department of Education and supported by Royal Mail - under which pupils, with advice from local trade volunteers, set up and run a company to manufacture and sell products.
Pupils elect a board of directors from among their peers, raise share capital, market and finance a product or service of their choice; at the end of the year they liquidate the company and present a report and accounts.
Late last year 'Success in Hand' were among school companies from across the Southern and South Eastern Education and Library
Board areas who gathered for the first Young Enterprise Trade Fair to be held in Banbridge, setting up shop at The Outlet.
The Dromore contingent did well at the pre-Christmas event, enjoying a profitable day's trading in their keyrings and gift items.
The event itself was hailed a success, Young Enterprise NI Development Manager Joanne Hughes particularly thanking Outlet Marketing Manager Christine Watson, herself a previous Young Enterprise student.
Like the Outlet event before it, the Rushmere Fair - whose sponsors included Royal Mail, Northern Bank, Moy Park, the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Craigavon Borough Council and the shopping centre itself - was also another stage in the Company of the Year Competition.
Judges from the local business community were on hand to evaluate each company; that evaluation, along with interviews in which the students will be asked to pitch their company, will help determine regional winners this year.
The best company will represent Northern Ireland in the Young Enterprise UK finals in London, an honour which last year went to 'Clash' from Banbridge Academy.
