TOP SPEAKER LINED UP FOR BEEKEEPERS' AGM

DROMORE Beekeepers' Association will hold its annual general meeting next month, at the same time welcoming arguably Northern Ireland's best known and respected speaker on beekeeping.

Ethel Irvine, who has spoken at venues across Ireland, Scotland and England, and lectures annually at the FIBKA Summer Beekeeping School at Gormanston, will address the local association and conduct the election of office-bearers at September's AGM.

"Dromore Beekeepers' Association is fortunate," a spokesperson said, "to have such an excellent speaker."

Enniskillen woman Ethel will speak on the topic, 'The Bee as a Communicator and our Reactions'.

Everyone is welcome to attend the meeting, in Dromore High School's Science centre at 7.30pm on Tuesday, September 21.

Coming up ahead of the AGM is the Intermediate Practical Beekeeping course in Dromore, organised by the Ulster Beekeepers' Association, on Wednesday 8 September.

And early in the New Year there will follow the Dromore Preliminary course for new beekeepers or those contemplating becoming beekeepers; it will begin on Monday, January 10.

Both courses (anyone interested in either are asked to contact Norman Walsh, norman@walsh43.plus.com) were announced by Dromore BKA chairman Sam Baird at this month's meeting, when speaker, Dr. Mervyn Eddie, filled the hall.

Dr. Eddie spoke on the subject of 'Varroa Control and Feeding Bees for Winter'.

The secret of good wintering, he said, was to stimulate the queen to lay in August and early September to produce lots of winter bees to take the colony through the winter and to provide sufficient stores to last till spring.

The main difference in winter bees, he said, was the "fat bodies" contained within the abdominal area, which stored both protein and energy and performed a function similar to the liver in mammals, the Varroa mite attacking both the adult bees and larvae and preventing the larvae developing "fat bodies" thereby making wintering much more difficult.
