TOWN IS IN THE FRAME

DROMORE Town Centre's unsightly spots could be literally in line for a 'facelift' if innovative new plans, aimed at bolstering civic pride, get off the ground.

Dromore Chamber of Commerce and the district council have teamed up for a project that promises to leave the plain parts of central Dromore as pretty as a picture - up to 20 pictures in fact.

A range of leading locals are in the frame to be snapped up for the pilot scheme; those who agree to take part will be photographed and asked the critical question, "What does Dromore mean to you"?

Each photograph will then be blown up and mounted in central Dromore, complete with the subject's thoughts on the town.

"Dromore is probably one of the first towns to attempt this sort of mobile photographic exhibition," said Town Centre Manager Mechelle Brown, who is working on the scheme with the Chamber of Commerce. "There's a lot to be proud of in Dromore and sometimes people forget that.

"We hope this will remind them and at the same time brighten up some of the darker areas of the town, where maybe there are boarded-up buildings or empty sites."

Recently approved by the council, the plan has been under discussion among Chamber members for a while now, but, according to Mechelle, there's still a bit of groundwork to do; securing the permission of property-owners, for instance.

That said, the scheme is at the stage where organisers are actively seeking out participants from among Dromore's leading lights, people active in the community, representative of different interests in town, from schools to sports clubs, people who have achieved in their own particular fields.

The resulting photographs will be blown up to a size of around four feet by three feet.

"We're hoping to have up to about 20 of these boards," said Mechelle. "It would be done in phases; when we have the first half dozen or so we would put them up, then the next half dozen and so on."

In addition, the plans include provision for a number of even larger photo-boards, showcasing some of the landscapes around Dromore.

Said Mechelle, "We anticipate that the photographs could be up for a year or so and we hope this project will help develop civic pride and ownership and make the town a bit brighter.

"It's a pilot scheme, and we hope it's well received; if so, we might look at extending it, or rotating the pictures more quickly."
