TRIPLE SUCCESS FOR DROMORE NURSERY SCHOOL
DROMORE Nursery School is celebrating a triple success as it continues to enjoy an exciting programme of events.
First, all seven members of the classroom staff - Mrs. S. Beattie, Mrs. C. McIlroy, Mrs. E. Jones, Miss J. Baxter, Mrs. R. Ogle, Mrs. F. Magill and Mrs. C. McVey - received their ELKHAN certificate at Level Two or Three.
Principal, Mrs. Sharon Beattie, explained, "This programme is a 10-week intense training course for speech and language development specifically in the Early Years.
"The staff had to implement the new practice, monitor, and review and evaluate it, then formulate an in-depth portfolio to obtain their certificates.
"This training has been invaluable; what a privilege for children to have a fully qualified staff working with them, all of whom have advanced an in-depth knowledge of language development."
Next, Miss Joanne Baxter recently completed High Scope Training, the culmination of two years of work, bringing yet another dimension and background of expertise to the setting.
Mrs. Beattie said of the achievement, "It is essential to embrace the best of practice from every avenue to continue to provide outstanding quality."
Finally, it was with great delight that Mrs. Moira Alexander MBE (Chairperson) and Mrs. Jane Russell (Secretary) accepted on behalf of the school a 'Silver Investors in People Award.'
The award was presented at Hillsborough Castle by the permanent secretary and at the ceremony Dromore Nursery School was the only organisation mentioned in the opening address.
Of the 33 organisations to receive awards, 25 received core standard, seven bronze and again, only one, Dromore Nursery, received Silver.
Mrs. Beattie felt particularly proud, she said, given the size of some of the other organisations.
"It was acknowledged as a considerable achievement to go in directly at 'Silver', and a very high silver, with only a small number of adjustments to receive 'Gold'," she said. "Presently there are less than half a dozen organisations provincewide with Gold standard."
Meanwhile, it has been an exicitng time at the nursery, not least thanks to a recent visit by Belfast Zoo.
"Joining our own variety of animals," said Mrs. Beattie, "we had a gecko, stick insect, frog and snake; the children had great fun looking, holding and learning about these animals.
"This visit is used every year to enhance the 'Animal Topic' in the curriculum under 'The World Around Us'. The visit was preceded with a visit from a local vet to start off the 'Dromore Vets Surgery' in the roleplay area."
