Thriving Dromore ‘Friends’ forge ahead with fundraising
DROMORE’S thriving Friends of the Cancer Centre support group is forging ahead with fresh fundraising plans, having last year raised an amazing £13,334 for vital services.
This week the group took delivery of special Easter baskets earmarked for local shops and businesses in a bid to raise funds for Friends, the charity providing an array of practical support for cancer patients and their families.
Also on the horizon is a fundraising table quiz in Alistair Magowan’s Thyme Square bistro.
Himself a Friends supporter, Alistair said of the planned quiz later this month, “It’s not exactly MENSA, but you might be surprised to see how seriously some of us take our quizzes.
“The idea is to have some fun and a good social evening with the chance to win a few prizes which are very kindly donated by local people and businesses.
“Times are pretty hard for many businesses just now but I think credit is due to so many local shops and firms who are still willing to be generous when it comes to supporting a good cause like this.”
Dromore’s generosity has not gone unnoticed by the charity itself, whose director, Colleen Shaw, said, “We rely totally on donations from the public so we know at first hand how generous people can be.
“As the Dromore Support Group demonstrates, people are often prepared not only to make personal donations but also to give of their time and we are extremely appreciative of everything they do.
“Their generosity and commitment allow Friends of the Cancer Centre to make a real and meaningful difference to the lives of thousands of cancer patients and their families across Northern Ireland, enabling us to provide the latest medical equipment to help with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and by funding specialist medical posts and research.
“It also helps us to improve the quality of life for cancer patients and their families through diverse projects which range from complementary therapies and relaxation classes to refurbishing the on-site ‘patient hotel’ for those who regularly have to travel long distances for their treatment.
“Friends’ funding is always directed towards projects and services which are outside and in addition to the provision already made by the Health Service, responding to needs highlighted by the Cancer Centre’s expert medical staff.
“We all need Friends at some times in our lives and our Friends in Dromore can be happy to know that they are extending the hand of friendship to people who need and value their support.”
The Thyme Square Table Quiz is at 7.30pm (for 8pm) on February 29. Entry costs £5 and further information is available from Alistair Magowan on 028 9269 2863 or any member of the Friends of the Cancer Centre’s Dromore Support Group.
