The Doghouse Sanctuary, Banbridge has issued an urgent appeal to help two young dogs who had been dumped in the Mournes.

The Sanctuary’s Gillian McFadden said she was ‘absolutely horrified’ at the condition of the dogs after they were brought to the sanctuary last week.

Gillian commented: “The two dogs are approximately six months old. They are two female border collies, and are part of the same litter that were dumped out and left to fend for themselves in the Mournes.

“They had been running for two weeks in the Mournes and Kilkeel.

“When we got them they were ravenous. They were just starving, their coats were a mess, full of tats. They were full of worms and were emaciated.

“They have never been on a lead, they have never had anyone to care for them.

“Eventually they made their way to a lady’s garden and were going back and forward, until she put food out and they started to come for it.

“They were then cornered and brought to us.

“We were absolutely horrified by they state they were in, and horrified that they were put in that position.

“We have an animal ambulance here, we would have happily driven to Kikeel to get them, rather than them being dumped like this.

“We need people to realise we are here and that’s why fundraising is important to us, to keep our ambulance going.

“The dogs are on three feeds a day and are still ravenous. They have been wormed and flead, and they will have their weight checked on a regular basis to maintain it.

“Their rehabilitation will take a while, they are seriously afraid of people.

“They are not aggressive, just very shy and wary, but they are good natured.”
