“Every penny donated tells a story and represents something or someone very special” - words spoken by the chairman of the Friends of the Cancer Centre are particularly poignant for one Banbridge couple, as they prepare to host a Vintage Tea Party.

The event organised by Bill and Betty Lutton will take place at 4 Steens Hill on May 30 from 2pm to 9pm, and May 31 from 2pm to 6pm.

It will raise funds in tribute to their daughter Pamela who was a superintendent radiographer at the Cancer Centre, until her sudden death aged 34.

Talking of Pamela, mum Betty said: “She was such a bubbly person.

“Pamela had worked in the Cancer Centre since she left university, first at Belvoir Park Hospital and then at Belfast City Hospital.

“She loved her work and loved being involved in the lives of the people under her care.”

The Friend’s of the Cancer Centre acknowledged the contribution Pamela made and the gap left by her absence, when they set up a scholarship in her name to benefit any member of the medical team in further training and research.

The charity also provides valuable services which are outside and in addition to those made by the Health Service.

“It’s a brilliant charity” said Betty. “As well as sponsoring clinical nurses, they have provided clinical nurse specialists to work alongside teenagers and breast cancer patients, they fund medical research and equipment and have improved the quality of life for patients by providing additional comforts and care.”

“They hope to raise £5 million over the next few years and that’s one of the reasons we decided to hold the vintage tea party.”

Referring again to the pennies that represent someone special, chairman Gordon McKeown said: “that’s why we promise that the money raised will be put directly back into the projects that make a real and meaningful difference to the lives of patients and their families”.
