Bann aim for Double

Clann na Banna are aiming for a league and Championship double as the 2014 season gets into full swing.

They’ve kicked things off with a duo of victories and club assistant boss Liam McCrum is hoping that’s just the start of an improvement on last year’s campaign.

He said: “We had a decent enough start last season but we had a few touh games and then it was clear that we weren’t going to make the push for promotion.

“The league season sort of petered out after that.

“We were in with a good chance of winning the Championship too but it was disappointing to lose out by a few points in the quarter-finals.

“This year, we really want to better that. We want to make a really good challenge for pomotion up to Division One and have a good go at winning the Championship as well.

“We’ve never been in Division One in the 20 years I’ve been involved with the club so that would be really big for the club.

“Two fairly strong teams dropped down from Division One last season so it’ll be tough but we want to have a good go at it.”

Last season’s player of the year, Stephen McArdle will no doubt be a major influence on how successful the Banbridge side is this year but he’ll be helped by a duo of returning starts that will no boost the Bann squad in the 2014 campaign.

McCrum said: “Stephen will no doubt be up there with the best of our players again this season. We also welcome back former Down keeper Michael McAllister so he will be a really big boost for us. Malachy magee has come back from Australia so he will be a really bigt player for us this season too.

“There are a few young guys making the step up too in Sean Linehan and Philip O’Keefe.”
