Banbridge Ladies first team secured a deserved 3-1 win over Victorians on Saturday.

From the first whistle, the girls were passing well and holding on to position. With excellent distribution from the centre midfielders Gail and Elayne to the forwards Rachel, Amy and Alex it was not long before the girls were in the circle creating chances for goal number one.

With Cathy Rees returning from injury up front, the pressure was kept on the Victorians defence and Banbridge won a penalty corner a few minutes before half time. The ball was hit out from Sam to Jenny at the top of the D. It was passed across to Elayne to the right who found Alannah at the back post and she got the deflection to make it 1-0.

Victorians were determined to get back into the game and came out fighting in the second half. It was end to end hockey for 15 minutes with both teams battling hard for the next goal. Excellent goalkeeping from Sarah and good defence from Charlie, Gina and Jenny at the back kept the score at 1-0.

Eventually after a well taken free from Sam on the left, the ball was passed to Amy who dribbled along the back line and pulled the ball back to find Gail. She slotted the ball across to Alannah who was at the top of the D who got a great shot at goal and found the back of the net for the second time.

The girls were playing well but it was not long before the Victorians bounced back. Intense pressure from Victorians saw them winning a few penalty corners which they were unlucky not to convert but the Banbridge defence remained solid.

The Victorians continued to press hard and eventually they got a goal. Whilst trying to clear the ball from danger, Banbridge were tackled in front of goal and lost the ball which Victorians forward slotted in to make the score 2-1.

With 10 minutes to go and the scoreline very tight, it was critical that Banbridge remained strong and composed. They survived a Victorians push and having one player sin-binned before the clincher arrived. Passes between Samantha and Gail on the left side of the pitch found Banbridge in the circle again where Lauren picked up the ball and slotted it home.

All in all, another excellent effort from the girls to secure another three points. A fantastic start to the league and player of the match went to Alannah. Next up, Banbridge face Knock on Wednesday 21st October.
