Chambers nets for Northern Ireland U17s

The West Bromwich Albion man was called up to Stephen Frail’s squad for their UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualifying campaign.

He did manage to find the net although the UEFA website and media reports credited his strike to ‘Maurice’ Chambers - the talented teenager’s middle name.

NI did manage a 2-1 win over San Marino in their final game at Mourneview Park on Saturday, but by that stage it was all too little, too late.

Jack, or Maurice, had started the previous two matches. An opening 4-0 defeat at the hands of Spain was a hard lesson but it was next game on which their campaign hinged.

The match was tied at 1-1 at half-time and just a minute after Slovakia restored their lead, Chambers levelled with what will be a memorable goal for the local lad.

All looked rosy when Reece McGinley made it 3-2 to NI but two goals in the final four minutes for Slovakia ended NI’s qualification hopes.

Chambers is currently enjoying his first season at West Brom and has recently received his international clearance, allowing him to begin his career at the club.

He was handed a two year scholarship after a successful trial last season, with a third year on professional terms.
